Information on the MDD / BBD
In accordance with European Regulation No. 1169/2011 of 25 October 2011 on the provision of food information to consumers, certain categories of products are not subject to the obligation to display a Minimum Durability Date, also known as MDD or formerly BBD.
This exemption applies in particular to confectionery products composed almost exclusively of flavoured and/or coloured sugars, as well as chewing gums and similar chewable products.
In France, Law No. 2015-992 of 17 August 2015 on the energy transition for green growth even specifies that the inclusion of the BBD is prohibited on products covered by this exemption, in order to limit food waste when this date is not relevant.
Thus, for certain confectionery products, the absence of an MDD or BBD on the packaging is in compliance with the applicable regulations.
