Best-before date / BBD information
Under European Regulation No 1169/2011 of 25 October 2011 on the provision of food information to consumers, certain product categories are exempt from the requirement to display a date of minimum durability, also known as a best-before date or BBD.
This exemption applies in particular to confectionery products consisting almost entirely of flavoured and/or coloured sugars, as well as chewing gum and similar products for chewing.
In France, Law No 2015-992 of 17 August 2015 on the energy transition for green growth specifies that displaying a BBD on products covered by this exemption is prohibited, to limit food waste where such a date is not relevant.
Accordingly, for certain confectionery products, the absence of a best-before date or BBD on the packaging complies with current regulations.
