Information on DDM / BBD
In accordance with European Regulation No 1169/2011 of 25 October 2011 on the provision of food information to consumers, certain product categories are exempt from the requirement to display a best-before date, also known as a DDM or, formerly, a BBD.
This exemption applies in particular to confectionery products consisting almost entirely of flavoured and/or coloured sugars, as well as chewing gum and similar products intended for chewing.
In France, Law No 2015-992 of 17 August 2015 on the energy transition for green growth even specifies that displaying a BBD is prohibited on products covered by this exemption, to reduce food waste where such a date is not relevant.
For some confectionery products, the absence of a DDM or BBD on the packaging therefore complies with current regulations.
